When the past doesn't feel like the past

Some experiences leave a lasting mark, even years after they've happened. They might be a single difficult event, or something that built up over time, but if it still affects how you feel, think or react today, it hasn't fully resolved.

You might notice:

  • Memories or images that resurface unexpectedly, even when you don't want them to

  • Feeling on edge, jumpy, or quick to react in situations that remind you of what happened

  • Avoiding certain people, places or conversations because they bring it all back

  •  A sense that you're still carrying something, even though logically you know it's over

  • Physical tension or a heightened sense of alertness that doesn't seem to switch off

  • Feeling like the experience still has a hold on you, even if you've tried to move past it

If this sounds familiar, it doesn't mean something is wrong with you, it means the experience hasn't been fully processed yet. That's something EMDR is specifically designed to help with.

Why a past experience can still feel so present

When something distressing happens, the brain usually processes it over time, the memory settles, and while you might still remember it, it no longer carries the same emotional charge.

Sometimes, though, that natural processing doesn't fully happen. The memory can get 'stuck', stored in a way that keeps it emotionally active. This is why certain triggers, a smell, a tone of voice, a particular situation, can suddenly bring back the same feelings as if it were happening again, even though the event is long over.

This isn't a flaw or a weakness. It's simply how the brain sometimes responds to overwhelming experiences, and it's exactly what EMDR is designed to address.

How EMDR can help you process past trauma

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a structured, evidence-based therapy developed specifically to help people process distressing experiences that haven't fully resolved.

Rather than asking you to recount every detail of what happened, EMDR works directly with how the memory is stored. Using guided eye movements (or other forms of bilateral stimulation), it supports your brain to reprocess the memory, reducing its emotional intensity and helping it move into the past where it belongs.

Many people find that after EMDR, they can think about what happened without it carrying the same emotional weight. The memory remains, but it no longer controls how you feel or react.

Who this support is for?

This support is intended for adults (18+) who are carrying the effects of a past difficult experience, whether that's a single distressing event or something that happened over a period of time. If you're not sure whether what you've experienced 'counts' as trauma, that's a really common feeling, and not something you need to have figured out before reaching out. A discovery call is a good place to start talking it through.

What to expect from
EMDR Therapy

EMDR therapy at Mind The Way follows a clear and structured process. Nothing happens without you understanding what's involved and feeling ready to proceed.

We begin by taking time to understand your history and the concerns that have brought you to therapy. Before any memory processing begins, we build coping strategies and stabilisation skills to ensure you feel grounded and supported throughout.

From there, treatment is tailored to your individual presentation and delivered at a pace that feels manageable. Sessions are collaborative, where you remain informed and in control at every stage.

Our approach is:

  • Clinically grounded and structured

  • Calm, collaborative and never rushed

  • Tailored to your individual history and needs

  • Delivered at a pace that feels safe for you
